Why Obama's Refinancing Plan Won't Pass Congress Posted: 26 Jan 2012 07:15 AM PST NEW YORK (MainStreet) -- If you're a homeowner, the White House wants to chop $3,000 off your monthly mortgage payments -- even if you're current on them. You won't even have to go through those controversy-courting government-sponsored mortgage providers Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. Most homeowners are probably ready to sign up for such a deal no questions asked, but the analysts who are asking questions aren't very optimistic. The president's proposal to help underwater homeowners was short on details. Overall, President Barack Obama's "January Surprise" would focus on underwater homeowners -- a big problem in the U.S. today. According to real estate Web site Zillow.com, about 28% of all U.S. homes are officially underwater -- meaning they owe more on their mortgages than their homes are worth. But millions more own homes that are just above water, keeping them from selling, refinancing, or otherwise adding to the economy. ...

Super Bowl Super Scams Cropping Up Posted: 26 Jan 2012 07:03 AM PST NEW YORK (MainStreet) -- The Super Bowl is best thought of as a time to rekindle old rivalries and eat more than 1 billion chicken wings (seriously), but the big game also tends to bring scammers out of the woodwork. All of the overzealous football fans in search of tickets and travel accommodations make good marks, but the Better Business Bureau looks to change that with some tips on how to avoid becoming a victim. The Super Bowl is a popular time for scammers to take advantage of over-zealous fans. Verify ticket-sellers and travel agencies with your local BBB. The BBB says it got 1,957 complaints against ticket sellers last year, with most alleging that tickets were misrepresented, not delivered within the estimated timeframe or never delivered at all. All it takes is a quick check on your local BBB Web site to see that the seller (and, similarly, the travel agency) you're thinking of using is in good standing. ...

What Obama Said About Your Money in the State of the Union Posted: 26 Jan 2012 06:56 AM PST NEW YORK (MainStreet) -- Much of President Barack Obama's third State of the Union speech focused on broad goals to keep the country strong and competitive, but the president did mention a few specific proposals that could have a tangible impact on how Americans find jobs and save money. Here are a few of the highlights: Tuition reform There's no doubt student loan debt is quickly becoming one of the biggest crises in this country, which is why we were particularly pleased to hear the president put pressure on universities to bring down tuition costs by threatening to withhold federal funding from those that don't. The president called for tuition reform, mortgage assistance and job training programs Tuesday night. "Let me put colleges and universities on notice: If you can't stop tuition from going up, the funding you get from taxpayers will go down," the president said in his speech. "Higher education can't be a luxury -- it is an economic imperative that every family in America should be able to afford." ...
